We had some really interesting discussion last night
Much of the tail end of our debate centered on the issue of attracting more and more diverse people to hardware hacking, and I think there are lots of outstanding ideas in this community: from childcare and other supports to having an open space during the week for beginners to dip their toes in before the "main event", to active collaboration with educators and journalists. As Gonzalo said, some people just want to come out and hack on their creative ideas for a day, others see it as a career step, while yet others just want to goof off with some blinkenlights. Bringing the hackerspace spirit of openness and tolerance and being excellent to each other is at the center of what we do here to create opportunities for everyone -- and I don't think we really need to re-invent anything.
One of my fellow panelists Marcus Cathomen wrote on Slack:
My main takeaway is that we could discover the different stakeholders (hacker, supporter/sponsor, challenge provider,..) and their motivation, skills and needs a little more in detail and this way lead and suppport them better. To adress the needs of hackers, we migh also have a look at gaming (wehre you might group into Achievers, Killers, Sozializers and Explorers -> see https://youtu.be/KzBaI-9AAjM?t=1622

We might think of players’ interest in history not as an interest in “historical accuracy”, but rather as an interest in “historical contingency”. Historical contingency occurs when a game accurately captures the particular circumstances, socio-political forces, and relations between historical figures, even if the details of how events turned out are fictionalized. Historical events are never inevitable, but rather are the culmination of numerous forces, agents, and circumstances pushing and pulling in various, often conflicting, directions. Games that achieve historical contingency as I am describing it are those that bring to light the complexity of the forces that have come to shape history. https://aestheticsforbirds.com/2019/08/21/playing-games-with-history-philosophers-on-the-ethics-of-historical-board-games/
