hack.the.box

  • our events are technically and intellectually promiscuous
  • representative of the BYOD effects, the personal ownership and responsibility over the computing environment is offset by the dependency on global corporate IT providers - checked only to some extent by "cloud native", Linux, FOSS, digital rights movements
  • a portable network scanner would examine all traffic (DNS or deep packet), upon MAC-registration provide a personalized report card.
  • both cheeky (how many times you d/led Wikipedia) and serious (which ports you have open) and social (which other users you relate to).
  • the box could also be an IPFS gateway, acting as local public fileshare, supporting open access to data and educating it's users.
  • any unpublished data would be symbolically burned, deleted at the end of an event.
  • chatbots and leaflets add educational aspects to proceedings.
  • inspired by CTF (infosec challenges), participants can engage to some short activities like checking the validity of a data package, doing some scraping, etc.
  • community events can be easily subscribed to, the latest challenges synced through dribdat APIs & data packages.
  • the h-box has to be accessible enough to be useful in teh classrooms, have a11y features, easy of installation and maintenance.
  • a local Mastodon instance - Storj instead of IPFS - custom UI or CI - Miro instead of Excalidraw ... a configurator allows full customization of the experience.
  • the hardware is off the shelf, easily repairable or replaceable, compatible with all networks and major platforms.
  • digital escape room - pentesting parade - what other integrations can you imagine?
  • a global participant profile would make login seamless and boost credibility of attendees.

Nice to see you here @gnz - question: would you be interested in talking to Switch about stepping in as partner on https://dribdat.cc ? There's a couple issues I think they might like to fund: #315 & #325, and it would be great to build on their support for TTN/ONIA with further development of hackathon platforms.

And of course we can as part of this enable login through Switch which would please the academic institutions: I recently received this request from the BFH to look into https://www.switch.ch/edu-id/docs/services/start/

The Eduhub working group, which already runs relevant projects like SWITCHcast (where I've published hackathon results already), would seem to me the first point of contact.

Their SWITCHportfolio project is very relevant and interesting for integrating hackathons into educational programs.

Last spring, a series of online newspaper and magazine articles highlighted the story of the American farmers, who were hacking their tractors using Ukrainian software bought online (Naughton, 2017). After buying tractors from the well-known brand John Deere, the world’s biggest manufacturer of agricultural machinery and products, the farmers were all facing the same problem. They realized that when their machine breaks they are not only legally obliged to call Deere’s customer service centre, which is the only entity entitled to analyse the tractor’s breakdown, but they also became aware that even when the service is slow, inefficient and overpriced, they cannot do much without violating the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (US Copyright Office, 1998). This legislation rules over the way people use a host of digital devices. and amongst other things, legally restrained the farmers from suing the company for loss of profit if the software results in non-performance.

Couple of interesting ideas from the MakeZurich kickoff today:

  1. Have images or even cloud VMs with common software (Arduino IDE, ThingSpeak etc.) ready to go (inspired by CernVM)
  2. Can GPT help us write Arduino code? Yes. Format a binary payload to JSON? Yes. Dig up real-time sensor data? No. Simulate it? Yes.
  3. It only takes 200 grams of special quick-foaming filament to 3D-print an airplane that actually flies.
  4. To hackathon is also a frame of mind, not just a format.
