Explore, Create and Share Learning Roadmaps in Tech

March 16, 2021

Our objective was to turn anything that runs in the browser into a deterministic, replayable web app that performs as close to the real experience as possible. We explored this from multiple technical fronts, including: A) serializing network requests by developing basically a cache.match() with fuzzy matching on the edge, B) serializing the DOM state by hacking css, patching Web APIs, inlining values, etc. We were lucky enough to get some amazing early customers who were patient with us during this early experimental phase. In the end, we are happy with our approach that balances ease of creation, broad application support, and maintains the integrity of the application’s experience. We allow any non-technical person to create these shareable demos in a matter of minutes facilitated through a chrome extension and our web app.

Share Your Product Demo

Questions about ownership, copyright, monetization, fan art, digital scarcity became important to address. Tactical finance or tokenization is not just a creative resistance against the financial institute – it was now also affecting me, the everyday artist. On a personal note, everything I ever made, whether it is a website or a video, or a 3D work is freely available on the web via . Even when it is sold. That is my personal ethos. I believe in knowledge and work distribution. But through these new smart contracts, it seems a new form of digital money alchemy is happening.

This platform is for anyone who wants to document projects they are doing towards tackling the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), or who wants to get inspired by other people’s projects, re-use them or re-purpose them.

The platform is based on Build in Progress, which was developed for documenting maker projects by Tiffany Tseng of MIT Media Lab’s Lifelong Kindergarten, as part of her Ph.D. thesis. It has been re-purposed by Oday Darwich of University of Geneva’s Citizen Cyberlab, as part of the Geneva Tsinghua Initiative (GTI) for the Sustainable Development Goals.

The Geneva Tsinghua Initiative (GTI) is a partnership between the University of Geneva and Tsinghua University in Beijing. The GTI adopts a modern approach to open innovation for the SDGs characterized by a focus on challenge-based learning inspired by real-world problems, and collaboration through multidisciplinary and multicultural teams, inspired by mentors from the many international organizations in Geneva.

There are many ways to document projects: wikis, Github etc. The point of SDG in Progress is to build up an open repository of SDG projects, which may involve hardware and software development, or focus more on grassroots or policy initiatives. The idea is to inspire creativity, while minimizing redundancy. Reinventing the wheel is not a problem, as long as you can improve it each time.

If you have suggestions for the SDG in Progress, or would like to contribute to developing it as an open source software project, please get in touch.

For a long time, I have believed in a myriad of small teams working together instead of huge companies that create a monopoly and then fight to preserve it. In fact, about ten years ago, some friends and I created the not-a-company ProstoKSI, which was made up of developers working together on open-source projects. Web3 makes this vision possible in a way that Web2 can’t, because of the guarantees that come with crypto.

How a PhD astrophysicist thinks about data - https://hex.tech/blog/friends-of-data/melodie-kao-1/

The real question to answer is: how do we move science away from its current scarcity mindset to one oriented toward generosity? That gets into the very human need to feel secure enough to take risks and share. We have more than enough data to go around, but not enough jobs or resources to make the most use of that data. Is that what we want as a society?

Why does putting our own data in front of us somehow compel us to act? In part, it's that feedback taps into something core to the human experience, even to our biological origins. Like any organism, humans are self-regulating creatures, with a multitude of systems working to achieve homeostasis. Evolution itself, after all, is a feedback loop, albeit one so elongated as to be imperceptible by an individual. Feedback loops are how we learn, whether we call it trial and error or course correction. In so many areas of life, we succeed when we have some sense of where we stand and some evaluation of our progress. Indeed, we tend to crave this sort of information; it's something we viscerally want to know, good or bad. As Stanford's Bandura put it, "People are proactive, aspiring organisms." Feedback taps into those aspirations. https://www.wired.com/2011/06/ff-feedbackloop/

the important factor here is not what ideas were created, but how they were created… and that makes all the difference, especially in a community context; traditionally, one service/person/authority comes up with an idea, followed by an activity to promote (or should I even say ‘impose’), their idea with to/onto others. .. [At our events] each team is tasked with resolving a social problem, comprising of individuals from varying backgrounds, all working together as equals.

The Anthropocene prevents the Noosphere from being heedless and utopian, while the Noosphere prevents the Anthropocene from becoming meaningless and dispiriting.

Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, the Noosphere's key early theorist alongside Vernadsky, imagined it to be not only a cosmic zone of human thought developing from and transforming the biosphere, but a living superorganism, a new organic unity in evolutionary history emerging from human beings' cultural and technological interconnection. Teilhard went so far as to analogize specific organ systems taking shape in this global human superorganism, including a supernervous system (global interactions via communication technologies), a superinheritance system (intergenerational transmission of accumulating cultural archives), a supercirculatory system (the global economy's movement of goods and capital), and a supermusculoskeletal system (mechanical and automated industry) (Miller, 1978; Teilhard de Chardin, 2004).
