The self-knowledge that is produced in a methodically controlled manner by doing personal science is simultaneously a special knowledge at the disposal of the self-tracker conducting the research. Taking the analytical perspective on the concept of expertise outlined earlier, the special knowledge of self-trackers doing research can be conceptualised as expertise. Like the special knowledge, this expertise is related to the self, one’s own body and/or life-world, and therefore can be described as self-expertise. Since it is not certified or recognised by any social institution, it can be understood as a case of non-certified expertise. https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/0963662519888757

Forums are the dark matter of the web, the B-movies of the Internet. But they matter. To this day I regularly get excellent search results on forum pages for stuff I'm interested in. Rarely a day goes by that I don't end up on some forum, somewhere, looking for some obscure bit of information. And more often than not, I find it there. https://blog.codinghorror.com/civilized-discourse-construction-kit/

Occasionally, startups will ask me for advice. That's a shame, because I am a terrible person to ask for advice. The conversation usually goes something like this: We'd love to get your expert advice on our thing. I probably don't use your thing. Even if I tried your thing out

From Energy Climate Hack participant Sabine Maennel:
@loleg Yes sure, we can have a call about that next week. For me time pressure really is an issue. I can't work well under time pressure.
I was on Kaggle active about 3 years ago. So I am not quite sure how it compares today. But what I really appreciated there is that I had a lot of time studying the data and approaches. Earning experience points also motivated me.
I liked that they had 3 categories to earn points in: discussions, kernels and competition. Discussion is of course the easiest for beginners: if you contributed valuable advices to others you could already earn experience point. Contributing kernels was another good category. They were mostly educational: explaining really well to other people how to do something with a dataset. Earning Competion wasn't really a category that was open to me then and it still wouldn't be. But I got many ideas from studying competitions. You could learn from the very best by studying these competions and then you could go and try what I learned on some voluntary contributed dataset, where there was less traffic.
I liked that the challenges where clearly defined. There was never really a need to have them explained by a challenge owner. And I also liked that they were out there for 2 month. People could think about the problem for an extended period and asyncronously. They could also form teams, what I never did, but would probably do today.

I don’t believe in optimism. I don’t believe in pessimism. Black folks saying “I been down so long the ‘down’ don’t worry me no more, but I’ll keep struggling anyway.” That is not an optimistic statement, nor a pessimistic statement. It is neither sentimental nor cynical.
It is an expression of hope.
Hope is not the same thing as optimism. Never confuse or conflate hope with optimism. Hope cuts against the grain. Hope is participatory—it’s an agent in the world. Optimism looks at the evidence, to see whether it allows us to infer whether we can do X or Y. Hope says, “I don’t give a damn, I’m gonna do it anyway.”

Our recent research has pointed out that ‘official’ actors primarily see transparency as a mean to ensure adoption, while citizens see transparency as a starting point for voicing their concerns and influencing the purpose and use of smart technology. This leads us to conclude that we - as designers of these systems - need to aim to design these systems for engagement as well as pushback by society.” — Gerd Kortuem

AI for Good
How no-code hackathons encourage citizen developers to innovate.
These kinds of projects don’t replace traditional IT, but they provide a pathway for apps that IT never would have time to build and pick some of the low-hanging fruit in the IT backlog. As a result, just as no-code can empower citizen developers to build solutions, it can also free up traditional developers to work on more sophisticated or strategic initiatives.
